The Least of These

17 Nov

They can’t seem to stop talking about her.

We received a letter from Tadelech, our sponsored World Vision child.  It was our first letter and the boy and I  huddled around Dad as he read aloud.  She tells us about her family with four siblings, where she lives.  She tells us of her home with two rooms and a roof…

Two rooms and a roof? My husband and I exchange glances, Oh Jesus, we are blessed. I place my arm on the boy, we pull out our world map and find her, somewhere on the Nile River, our hearts are connected.

We placed the letter and picture on the refrigerator.

Curiosity has been the motivator for my kids this morning:

What do you think she is doing right now?

Would she want to be my friend?

Can you read the letter to me again?

Then the hard questions started coming as they thought things through:

Does she get to go to school?

How do they all fit in a tiny house?

Does she have enough to eat today?

Does she know Jesus?

And I had to answer that I just don’t know

Not too long ago I read this post on poverty.  She refers to poverty as a giant. It does seem that way, doesn’t it?

Sometimes I read and study and pray and get  overwhelmed by the needs of our broken world.

So, what can we do? How can we, the Church, give and be effective at meeting the needs of the hungry, those who need the Bread of Life?

  1. Give to your local body. Does your church have a food ministry?  Give your time.  Buy groceries for a neighbor.
  2. Sponsor a child. Compassion International and World Vision are the two I know the most about and trust.

And if you need another place to start, my friend Tanya gave some great, practical ideas for Christmas gifts that matter, on her blog.

Didn’t Jesus come for the least of theseThe least of these, just like me

Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.  He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” Luke 4:18-19 NLT
